For many, the start of winter means only one thing- extreme sports! So why not embrace the season and make the most of your weekend with a visit to a destinations that offers guaranteed snow. A good option is Lech Zürs am Arlberg in Austria where the winter season kicked off on the 1st December and they have 305 kilometres of ski slopes and 200 kilometres of high alpine runs. 10th December. Stir up Sunday
OK, so the official stir up Sunday when we traditionally make our Christmas pudding has been and gone, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still whip up a Christmas cake that is pretty healthy by avoiding the traditional booze, sugar and fat. Put 225g of dates in a saucepan and bring to boil then simmer for 30 minutes. Leave to cool. Put 450g of mixed dried fruit like sultanas, raisins, apricots and figs into a bowl with 175g wholemeal flour, 25g ground almond and 1tsp of baking powder, cocoa powder and mixed spice into a bowl plus the zest of one orange. Add the dates, and 8 tablespoons of orange juice. Put into a 20cm round cake tin and bake for 1 ¼ hours.
11th December. The Monday motivator
The second Monday of the festive season and no doubt your to-do list is stretching further than Blackpool’s Golden Mile. First to be cut is often your workout. But the time when we are busiest is often the time when we most need to train, relieving stress and boosting our emotional wellbeing as well as looking after our physical health. Give yourself a helping hand with a little post workout boost. Shaken Udder has a range of calcium packed milkshakes with immune boosting vitamin B12, and are a natural source of protein and calcium which can help to aid muscle recovery and restore nutrients after exercise. They come in some interesting sounding flavours too like Chocolush and Vanillalicious!
12th December. Beating festive pain
It’s Training Tuesday, time to get down to the gym for a session. But if aches and pains are stopping you from doing your usual workout this festive season, then you’re not alone with 2 in 5 of us said to suffer with daily pain. The PainPod launches this winter which is said to relieve pain, manage illnesses and accelerate recovery time from illnesses without the need for prescription pain medication. The device utilises bio-electrical nerve stimulation to block pain signals from travelling to the brain whilst releasing the brain’s own ‘feel-good’ endorphins.
13th December. Wellbeing Wednesday
Almost half-way through December already but there is still much to come. Stress, overwhelm and a packed schedule coupled with the plummeting temperatures can mean that your immune system isn’t quite 100%. But there are ways to boost your immunity and ensure you’re in perfect health for the festivities. Vitamin D comes from sunlight and is converted by our bodies to immune system boosting vitamin D3. And in the winter months when sunshine is in short supply, our bodies can become more susceptible to colds, flu and respiratory tract infections. In winter time, a supplement of vitamin D can not only bolster our immune systems but even regulate our mood and protect our bones.
