Selected from Reddit discussions and manufacturer information, with versatility, loading options and space in mind. This is editorial research, not our own hands-on testing. Each pick includes an example product and buying checks.
Adjustable dumbbells

An adjustable pair covers several lower-body exercises and lets you change the load in small increments. That versatility is valuable in a small home gym: the same dumbbells can work for RDLs, lunges and glute bridges.
- Useful for
- Romanian deadlifts, split squats, goblet squats and loaded glute bridges.
- The advantage
- Many exercises from one compact, storable set.
- The trade-off
- Maximum weight, grip strength and bulky plates may eventually become limiting.
Community perspective: Adjustable dumbbells are repeatedly suggested as a versatile starting point in this discussion. Reddit discussion ↗
A stable bench or suitable hip-thrust support

A suitable support expands your training options. Height and stability matter for hip thrusts: a tall general-purpose weight bench can feel very different from a low support designed for that setup. Check the intended exercise and the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Useful for
- Hip thrusts where the setup is suitable, plus bench-based and supported exercises.
- The advantage
- Versatile support for several training goals.
- The trade-off
- Takes up space; one bench does not automatically fit every body size or exercise.
Community perspective: One home setup in this discussion was developed because the available bench was too high. Reddit discussion ↗
Fabric mini bands for abduction

Short fabric loops are handy for lateral steps and abduction variations. Choose the loop size and resistance to suit the movement. Feeling a burn alone tells you little about how well your whole programme will work over time.
- Useful for
- Lateral steps and controlled abduction variations.
- The advantage
- Small, quick to set up and easy to carry.
- The trade-off
- Less versatile than long bands; a very tight loop can restrict the movement.
Community perspective: Several comments distinguish short fabric loops from long bands and discuss thin rubber loops rolling up. Reddit discussion ↗
Long loop resistance bands

Long bands serve different movements from short hip bands and offer a compact way to add resistance at home. Tension rises as the band stretches, so a printed kilogram range is not a fixed dumbbell or barbell load.
- Useful for
- Band-resisted hinge and good-morning variations where the setup is appropriate.
- The advantage
- Minimal storage with a choice of resistance levels.
- The trade-off
- Loading feel and progression differ from free weights.
Community perspective: The discussion of training without a barbell also shows that band-based alternatives do not feel equally suitable to everyone. Reddit discussion ↗
A barbell, matching plates and collars

A barbell becomes interesting when you want more loading capacity and have room for the setup. Allow for the full bar length, storage and loading the plates. Squats may require additional suitable supports.
- Useful for
- Barbell hip thrusts and Romanian deadlifts with an appropriate setup.
- The advantage
- Expandable in small increments with compatible plates.
- The trade-off
- More space and setup time than a compact dumbbell set.
Community perspective: One home trainee identifies the need for more loading capacity as a limit of a small existing setup. Reddit discussion ↗
A barbell pad for hip thrusts

A suitable pad spreads pressure from the bar over a larger contact area. It is most relevant when you already perform barbell hip thrusts and want a more comfortable setup. Fit and fastening need to suit your bar.
- Useful for
- Barbell hip thrusts.
- The advantage
- A targeted comfort upgrade with little extra storage.
- The trade-off
- A pad alone does not increase the training load or guarantee better results.
Community perspective: A hip-thrust pad is mentioned as part of a home setup in the equipment discussion. Reddit discussion ↗
A kettlebell at a suitable fixed weight

A kettlebell can be a simple option if its handle suits you and the weight fits your exercises. If you start with adjustable dumbbells, it is more of an alternative or later addition.
- Useful for
- Goblet squats and hinge variations; swings once you have learned the technique.
- The advantage
- A compact tool with an accessible handle.
- The trade-off
- One fixed weight may suit one exercise but be too light or heavy for another.
Community perspective: Kettlebells are also suggested in the space-conscious home-training discussion. Reddit discussion ↗
A hip-thrust belt for weights you already own

A hip-thrust belt holds compatible weights you already own. It may simplify a setup without a barbell, but suitability depends on dumbbell shape, body proportions and clearance. Check the exact model; improvised attachments in comments are not manufacturer instructions.
- Useful for
- Hip thrusts with compatible dumbbells or other permitted weights.
- The advantage
- Uses existing weights and takes little storage space.
- The trade-off
- Reported comfort and usable range of motion vary considerably.
Community perspective: The recent thread includes positive experiences alongside reports of pressure, shifting weights and restricted clearance. Reddit discussion ↗
A stable height-adjustable exercise step

A suitable step offers lower height settings than many benches, which can help with an individual setup. Reebok lists 15, 20 and 25 centimetres for this example. The right height depends on the exercise and your usable range of motion.
- Useful for
- Controlled step-ups or suitable lower supports where permitted by the manufacturer.
- The advantage
- Several defined height settings instead of one bench height.
- The trade-off
- Needs sufficient usable surface area and is not interchangeable with every box or item of furniture.
Community perspective: The discussion of an overly tall bench illustrates why support height matters. Reddit discussion ↗
Floor sliders as a small accessory

Sliders add floor exercises such as sliding leg curls and bridge variations. Glute-specific support in our Reddit research is less clear than for dumbbells, a bench and bands, so we place them last as an optional accessory.
- Useful for
- Sliding leg curls and controlled bridge variations.
- The advantage
- Very small and useful for supplementary floor exercises.
- The trade-off
- Many variations strongly involve the hamstrings; sliders do not replace progressively loadable core equipment.
Which setup fits your space?
- Start small: adjustable dumbbells and a suitable band if needed. Glute bridges can initially be performed from the floor.
- Add options: choose suitable stable support, then short or long bands according to the exercises you actually plan to do.
- Add loading range: consider a barbell, plates and matching collars if space allows. Choose padding or a belt to fit the weights and setup you already use.
What matters more than a brand name
Plan regular resistance training that can adapt to your ability. The 2026 ACSM position stand considers different training approaches and equipment. That is more useful for a buying decision than expecting one accessory to be a prerequisite for progress.
In a nine-week study involving 34 untrained young adults, squats and hip thrusts produced similar measured gluteal growth. It was not an equipment comparison. For this guide, it supports a measured view: one exercise or a particularly strong muscle sensation does not determine the quality of a whole programme.
How we chose the list
We read ten public Reddit discussions about home training and glute equipment, then checked example products against official manufacturer information. We prioritised exercise versatility, useful loading increments, space and setup. This is an editorial selection, not our own hands-on product test or a scientific ranking. Individual experiences are not a representative survey.
Recurring themes include adjustable weights, suitable stable support, and the different roles of short and long bands. Comfort reports for hip-thrust belts are mixed. Our editorial takeaway is to choose the basic setup first and add accessories for a specific need.
Example products illustrate a specific design and link to manufacturer details. The Amazon buttons open equipment-category searches on Amazon UK; results and variants may differ from the example. Check the model, package contents and current terms there. These are ordinary links without an affiliate tag.
